Ashwagandha is a nightshade family native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. It grows as a shrub 35–75 cm tall, with dull green leaves and green, bell-shaped flowers. When its fruits are ripe, they are orange-red. The name “ashwagandha” is a combination of the Sanskrit words “ashva”, meaning horse, and “gandha”, meaning smell – to show that the root has a strong horse-like odour!
